Please give us a call at 0490 346 388 if you still have any questions or want to book an appointment. Till then let us answer some basic questions about paving and us as a company.

Why should I get paving done on my property?

Paving is an excellent idea if you want to increase the value of your home. Also, it adds to the aesthetics of your home/office. Pavers are very durable and can take a lot of weight without chipping or breaking. And they come in various colours, and the patterns available are merely unlimited. Simply put, pavers make your place look beautiful.

What is ABC?

ABC stands for Aggregate Base Course. It is the base layer. It is applied and then compacted after that sand is placed on it and then the pavers.

Why do I need ABC?

ABC is the most critical part of the paver installation. It has been seen that 80% of pavement failures have occurred because ABC was not appropriately used or was not used at all. We take proper care of using the right quantities of ABC so that the pavement life is long.

Is sealing the pavers necessary?

No, sealing the pavers is not a necessary step. Sealers make stain removal more comfortable, minimize weed growth in the joints, and may enhance colours. But, the problem is that they need to be reapplied every 3-5 years, and in places of rough usage or extreme weather conditions, the frequency increases even more. Thus, they are more of a personal preference.

Can I install pavers on my patio or pool deck?

It all depends on the space. You need space. If you have it, you can. Pavers come in different thicknesses. So, you can choose one that fits the space you have.

Talk to one of our experts, and we will together find a solution for you.

Can I pave over my existing concrete walkway?

If the walkway is in good condition and there is not much heaving, then yes, you can install paving over your existing walkway. Some other issues that need to be taken care of are, firstly, your walkway will be raised by about 3” because of the bricks and other material. This becomes important if any gates need to open. Secondly, if your concrete slabs experience freeze/thaw cycle, your bricks will rise/drop too.

Can I extend my already existing paving?

The most significant positive point of paving is its flexibility. Yes, you can extend your existing paving. Simply remove the existing edge restraint and a few of the rows of bricks at the end. Now, prepare the setting bed and base for the new section. Also, mix a few of the old bricks with the new ones, and you are good to go.

In Bendigo, are pavers too hot for my patio or pool deck?

Well, that depends on the colour you are choosing. Yes, dark colours make the surface hot. While light-coloured pavers go nicely for any place, they keep the surface fresh, and it is entirely comfortable.

Can I remove the paving if there is a problem?

Yes, the paving can be removed, but it is not that easy. You will need professional help if you decide against them.

So, give us a call if you need any kind of help. We will remove your paving for you.

Can I replace a chipped or damaged paver myself?

Yes, you can. It is straightforward. You can pull a paver out by using two flathead screwdrivers.

We suggest that you keep some pavers aside while you are getting them installed. This way, you will have extra pavers to replace the damaged ones. Also, pavers are quite sturdy and do not get chipped, but if still need be, you know what to do.

Are pavers strong enough? Can I drive on them?

Yes, pavers are reliable. They have a compressive strength of a minimum of 8000 p.s.i., which is more than thrice of concrete. Pavers are a magical combination of looks and strength.

How can I prevent weeds from growing between pavers?

Weeds grow from wind carried seeds that fall between paving stones. These seeds grow up into weeds. But these can either be uprooted or removed by a biodegradable herbicide.
Sealers are an excellent option that can be considered for preventing weed growth between the pavers.

Do pavers lose colour with time?

The answer is sometimes they do and sometimes not. If proper care is taken, the pavers will not lose colour. Proper cleaning and sealing can restore the colour. Some of the reasons that lead to loss of colour are dirt, weathering, and even normal water. It also depends on the types of pavers you are using, whether stone, brick, or concrete.

Are pavers slippery?

No, they are not. They have enough friction for walking, driving, or pool-side activities. Instead, they are safer than tiles in most cases. But sealed pavers get just a bit slippery when wet.

Does Bendigo Paving bring all the material or do I have to arrange for it?

We care for your convenience, and thus we will happily do that for you. But, if you want to arrange it for yourself, you are most welcome to do it. We can assist you in any way you want us to.  Sometimes clients want a specific type of paver, and they want to source it themselves. In any case, we are flexible and available for help in any manner we can be.

If I buy the material on my own, will you pick it up for me, because I do not have a trailer?

Yes, we will do it if it is in the local area. We are always ready to help you and make the process as smooth and easy for you as possible.

What do you mean by efflorescence?

Often after weeks or months, a white haze accumulates on your pavers. This white layer is efflorescence. Also, it looks more prominently on dark-coloured pavers. This makes it look as if the colour is fading. Another key to know it is efflorescence and not colour fading, that when wet, the white layer disappears. It is entirely natural and will disappear after some time.

When will efflorescence disappear?

The efflorescence will automatically stop after 18 to 24 months. Sometimes faster and sometimes later. In areas prone to rains and good sunlight, efflorescence will pass more quickly as compared to drier climates.

Will efflorescence disappear automatically?

The answer is yes. But when it stops is dependent on many factors. But it is a natural process, and it will pass away naturally. Rainwater will eventually wash it away. But it takes time. Areas with acidic rainfall have the upper hand because acidic rainfall washes efflorescence faster.

Can we remove efflorescence without waiting?

Yes, we can make efflorescence disappear. Various cleaners come to clear efflorescence. But these contain acids and detergents and thus must be used with care. Otherwise, it may lead to injury or discolouration of the pavers. Also, you will need to repeatedly clean with the cleaner as efflorescence appears again and again. This process continues until the white haze stops appearing, which takes some time.

What are the ingredients used in paving?

The main ingredients used in paving are stone base, sand setting bed, pavers, sand for joints, and an edge restraint for containing the pavers at the perimeter.

Which sand is used for paving?

Use concrete sand for paving. This concrete sand is spread evenly with 1” thickness. Also, remember not to compact the sand, just spread it evenly. Take care not to use stone dust or screening because they lead to improper drainage.

How much sand and the modified stone base goes in for walkways, patios, and driveways installation?

Bendigo Paving recommends a minimum of 250mm for driveways and 120mm to 180mm stone base for patios. And the sand setting bed should be 25mm thick. Also, use Stabilizer Sand for filling the joints between the pavers.

What is Geotextile? What does Geotextile do and why do we need it?

Geotextile is plastic threads woven that allow water to pass but stop the minute sand particles. The main objective behind using Geotextile is that it stops the sand below the stone foundation to enter this foundation. This is a prolonged process. Over time sand enters the stone foundation and weakens it. This happens especially during the thaw cycles. Geotextile stops this and elongates the life of your paving by many years.

How long will my paving last?

Paving lasts many years, approximately 20 to 30 years before any significant repairs are necessary. It will surely outlast your poured-in-place concrete, patterned asphalt, and stamped concrete by many years.

How long does the paving installation take?

Paving is a speedy process. An average-size patio can be done within a day or two. So, you can imagine the time required for the job you have in mind.

What is better, pavers or patterned/stamped concrete?

Pavers. Patterned/stamped concrete is large sections of poured-in-place concrete. Thus, they have similar problems as lower strengths and cracking and spalling due to freeze/thaw cycles. Plus stamped concrete needs expansion joints after approximately every 10 feet which destroys the appearance. While pavers are flexible and let the earth breathe and have none of the above problems, and the price per square foot is approximately the same for both.

How do I care for the paving once done?

Caring for pavers is easy. Simply clean it regularly with a broom and if you expect rains, pre-clean the surface, because leave and debris after rains stains the stones, which results in more labour later on. After brooming, wash it with a regular garden hose. If stains persist then, make a solution of water and soap and rub with a rag or a sponge.

More carefulness can be shown by applying sealers and replace your pavers once they are severely stained or damaged.
